Tanzanian currency dominates trade in Lake Niassa Administrative Post

Moeda tanzaniana domina o comércio no Posto Administrativo do Lago Niassa

Commercial transactions in the town of Wikihi, in the Cobué Administrative Post, in the district of Lago, in Niassa, are carried out in the Tanzanian currency 'Xelim', due to the difficulties of access routes to the interior of Mozambique.

Dependent solely on the sea, the 4,000 or so inhabitants of Tanzania are therefore forced to turn to Tanzania for basic necessities.

Jorge Suboana, the town's chief, said that the sea route does not offer the necessary conditions for the transportation of goods.

"To get to the district headquarters we use motorboats, and the route is a single sea route. There is no road. It takes two or three days to get there and it can take four days if the tide is bad," he lamented.
