Terrorism: Mozambique to receive military equipment from Russia

Terrorismo: Moçambique vai receber equipamento militar da Rússia

Russia will supply Mozambique with military equipment to improve the country's capacity to fight terrorism and defend its territory.

The news was announced this Wednesday in Maputo by the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, after a long audience with the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi.

There were more than two dozen journalists in the room where the press conference was to take place, waiting for the first statements after the extensive meeting between the President of the Republic and Sergei Lavrov.

Known for his incisive style, Lavrov's speech was marked by promises and messages to the West.

Sergei Lavrov told the media that Russia is ready to supply military equipment to Mozambique to improve its defense and counter-terrorism capabilities, through the reactivation of military-technical cooperation, which had been suspended because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Russia is "willing to supply equipment to our Mozambican friends, both to strengthen the country's security and to fight terrorism," Lavrov said, referring to the terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado.

On the same occasion, the Russian president spoke about the meeting that Filipe Nyusi and Vladimir Putin will hold in July, on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg, to which end he invited the Mozambican head of state on this visit.

"We are preparing for the second Russia-Africa summit in July, in St. Petersburg, from the 26th to the 29th, and we are expecting a representative delegation from Mozambique, led by President Nyusi. In addition to the agenda, there will be a bilateral meeting between President Putin and President Nyusi," he said.
