EDM bets on communication in the fight against energy fraud

EDM aposta na comunicação no combate a fraudes de energia

Empresa Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) revealed it is applying methods, practices and corporate communication strategies to raise the awareness of customers and society in general to combat the illegal use of electricity and vandalizing of equipment, which generates losses valued at nearly 100 million dollars a year.

The fact was announced this morning by one of the panelists representing EDM, during the debates of the 1st communication seminar, organized by Eduardo Mondlane University, in Maputo city.

The source added that the company has also been setting up crisis management committees that assist in combating illegal consumption of electricity, vandalization of equipment, and other evils.

"For example in the city of Chimoio, EDM was able, in one community, to eradicate the vandalizing of equipment by building a school and installing a grinding mill to generate employment for the residents who sabotaged the equipment," he said.

Yesterday was the second and last day of reflections on corporate communication in Mozambique: experiences, practices and trends, in one of the parallel sessions taking place in the I seminar on Communication at Eduardo Mondlane University.

In another panel, participants discussed the topic; Interfaces of public communication and the use of digital media in the context of emergencies: Cases of Covid-19, conflicts and cyclones in Mozambique, moderated by Mateus Simbine from Polytechnic University.

Communication strategists from several companies, such as Electricidade de Moçambique, Banco Millenium Bim, among others, have participated in these panels, sharing their experiences to raise the awareness of their clients.

The third panel had as speaker Professor Afonso Vassoa, who focused on the pillars of organizational communication for peace and sustainable development: trends, opportunities in the labor market, academia, and legislators/regulators in Mozambique.
