UE disponibiliza 1,8 Milhões de dólares de apoio a Moçambique face a cólera e após ciclone

The European Union (EU) today announced support of 1.8 million dollars for Mozambique to deal with the effects of Cyclone Freddy and cholera outbreaks.

"Following devastating floods, the impact of tropical cyclone Freddy and the outbreak of cholera in the country, the EU has made its support available to Mozambique, mobilizing around 1.8 million dollars through its humanitarian partners," reads a statement quoted by Lusa.

The European Union Humanitarian Office (Echo) has channelled 350,000 dollars to Care, WeWorld/GVC, Save the Children and the World Food Programme to fund shelter, water, sanitation and other emergency support.

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) have been given the go-ahead by the EU to disburse emergency funds of 1.5 million dollars "in coordination with the government to respond to the needs of the population".

The EU "has also activated the Copernicus emergency management service to support the humanitarian response with real-time satellite images".

Support against climate change and the impact of extreme phenomena is "one of the main priorities of the multi-annual bilateral support for the country, to which 428 million euros have been committed covering the 2021-24 period," he stressed.

At the humanitarian level, "for this year, 25 million euros have been confirmed (a decision announced on March 9) as new funds to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable Mozambicans, including in the province of Cabo Delgado".
