Queen of Brazilian rock music Rita Lee dies at 75

Rainha do rock brasileiro Rita Lee morre aos 75 anos

Rita Lee, one of the greatest singers and songwriters in the history of Brazilian music, died on Monday (8) at the age of 75. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2021 and had been undergoing treatments against the disease.

The singer's family released a statement on her social networks: "We announce the death of Rita Lee, at her home in São Paulo, late last night, surrounded by all the love of her family, as she always wished". The wake will be open to the public at the Ibirapuera Park Planetarium on Wednesday (10), from 10am to 5pm.

Rita helped incorporate the rock revolution into the creative explosion of tropicalism, formed the most cult Brazilian rock band in the world, the Mutantes, and created songs in her solo career with enormous popular appeal without losing her freedom and irreverence.

Always modern, Rita was a reference for creativity and female independence during her almost 60-year career. The title of "queen of Brazilian rock" came almost naturally to her, but she thought it was "tacky" - she preferred "patron saint of freedom". (G1. Globo)
