Portugal forma moçambicanos em classificação e transparência no negócio de diamantes

Portugal is training four Mozambicans in diamond business classification and transparency, as part of the African country's efforts to enter the market for this highly sought-after ore worldwideAccording to a document consulted by Lusa on Monday.

The training action takes place within the framework of the demands of the Kimberley Process, an international mechanism that advocates transparency in business and combating the sale of diamonds mined in war zones, the revenue from which is used to finance armed and illegitimate violence, the Mozambican government document states.

The text mentions that five Mozambicans will go to Thailand for training in identification and evaluation of diamonds and gems, aiming to give the country the capacity to fulfill the requirements determined by the Kimberley Process.

As part of Mozambique's commitment to the Kimberley Process procedures, a mission from this entity will assess the degree of compliance of the African country with the internationally stipulated requirements for the diamond business.

To enter the diamond market, Mozambique has been interacting with authorities in Angola, South Africa and Russia, aiming at an exchange of experiences with these three countries that have a vast knowledge of the activity and relationship with the Kimberley Process.

The document also states that the facilities for the operation of the Maputo diamond warehouse are ready and several pieces of equipment for diamond, precious metals and gems have already been purchased and will be installed in the laboratory by next week.

By Friday, the Kimberley Process Management Unit offices and laboratory will be properly equipped, the document adds.
