Mozambique bets on wheat production

Moçambique aposta na produção de trigo

Mozambique will take advantage of the ecological potential of Tete and Niassa provinces, in the center and north of the country, respectively, to invest in wheat production, as announced today by the President of the Republic (PR).

Filipe Nyusi, who was speaking on the sidelines of the opening of the first agricultural research symposium in Mozambique, at KaTembe, said that the first trials show promising results.

"We are pleased to announce that the Mozambican team of wheat researchers has successfully completed its research program and has already decided on the high yield potential varieties to be adopted for our country's conditions," Nyusi said.

The results of the analysis indicate a production capacity of seven tons of grain per hectare in Niassa, and four tons per hectare in other regions, Nyusi said.

"The next steps are the release of the variety and the dissemination of the technology that will involve the massive multiplication of the seeds and the training of our extensionists and producers to massify its production," he said.

According to Nyusi, the domestic production of wheat will reduce the foreign dependency that has worsened with the conflict in Eastern Europe.

Also at the event, the PR announced that in the next two and a half years, the Government will provide three billion meticais to the Mozambique Agricultural Research Institute for the improvement of laboratories and seed production fields. Read more...
