Third wave makes Mozambique reassess response to Covid-19

Terceira vaga faz Moçambique reavaliar resposta à Covid-19

Risk of running out of beds and oxygen reserves in some provinces to be discussed at meeting with partners. UN, partners and authorities can strengthen oxygen chains, but "need to define a plan".

The United Nations (UN), partners, and the Mozambican government meet this Friday (09.07) in Maputo to reassess the response plan to Covid-19. The meeting takes place at a time when a third wave is ravaging the country.

"It is a dynamic plan," so the meeting should help "decide how best to support efforts to fight the new coronavirus and the situation generated by the new variants in the country," added a source heard by the Lusa agency.

On Wednesday, Health Minister Armindo Tiago warned about the risk of running out of beds and oxygen reserves to treat the most serious cases in some provinces.

A source connected to the process explained to Lusa that this will be one of the subjects in the meeting, once the UN agencies, partners and authorities have a way to support and reinforce the oxygen chains, being only necessary to define an action plan.

The UN group is led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and the partner group is led by the World Bank. Since June, Mozambique has experienced an acceleration in the number of covid-19 infections and deaths, with a cumulative total of 934 deaths and 83,485 cases of covid-19, 86% of which have been recovered.
