Chicken production in Maputo grew by 7% last year

Produção de frango na cidade de Maputo cresceu 7% no ano passado

The city of Maputo, the country's capital, produced 8,348.5 tons of chicken meat in 2023 compared to 7,795.8 tons in 2022, which corresponds to a growth of 7%.

According to the director of the City's Economic Activities Service, Hélio Neves, who was speaking yesterday, Thursday (03), during the launch of the 2024 animal vaccination campaign, the increase is due to vaccination awareness campaigns, the availability of vaccines and the implementation of measures to control the movement of animals, their products and derivatives.

"Livestock farming is a growing sector with enormous potential for job creation. This development is the result of interventions by the public sector through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the invaluable support of cooperation partners," he said.

Cited by AIMHélio Neves added that "the livestock value chains have great potential for generating family income, creating secure employment, and making a significant contribution to the economy that ensures the resilience of populations to the climate changes that the country is suffering from". In this sense, the Council of State Representation Services in Maputo City (CSRECM) is committed to increasing production, introducing resilient technologies, prevention and control of animal diseases, for an accelerated increase in production.

This is why the CSRECM is warning all stakeholders about the importance of complying with the animal vaccination process in order to avoid serious damage.

For this campaign, the city of Maputo plans to vaccinate "950 cattle against anthrax, 600 cattle against symptomatic anthrax, 98,000 birds against Newcastle disease in three campaigns, an increase of 1 percent, due to the reduction in the number of cafeteria chickens, 16,000 animals against rabies, of which 15,000 are canines and 1,000 felines".
