Macau Polytechnic invests in joint research with Lusophone universities

Politécnica de Macau aposta em investigação conjunta com universidades lusófonas

The Polytechnic University of Macau (UPM) today announced an agreement to promote joint scientific and technological research projects with a group of 76 higher education institutions from Portuguese-speaking countries.

According to a statement, the agreement "aims to jointly promote the development of science, carry out collaborative innovation research, train professional staff and develop scientific and technological projects".

The agreement was signed on Wednesday in Lisbon by the rector of UPM, Marcus Im Sio Kei, and Conceição Rego, member of the Forum for Higher Education Management in Portuguese-speaking Countries and Regions (Forges).

The note states that UPM began cooperating with Forges in 2012, which brings together more than 400 experts and academics and 76 higher education institutions and organizations from Portugal, Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Mozambique, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau and Macau.

UPM stressed that the agreement with Forges also aims to foster the development of the Alliance for Portuguese Language Teaching in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

This alliance was launched in June 2020 by UPM, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and the University of Hong Kong's Institute of Professional and Continuing Education.

The Greater Bay Area is Beijing's project to create a global metropolis comprising Hong Kong, Macau and nine cities in Guangdong province, in a region with around 80 million inhabitants and a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of over one trillion euros, similar to the GDP of Australia, Indonesia and Mexico, the G20 countries.
