UN wants to create 400M jobs in green economies

ONU quer criar 400M de empregos nas economias verdes

Creating 400 million new jobs in the green and welfare economy is the ambitious goal set by the United Nations by 2030. And the goals do not stop there. The UN also wants to extend social protection to 4 billion people who are still unprotected.

To accomplish this goal, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has requested the support of major financial institutions for the launch of the UN Global Accelerator for Employment and Social Protection.

The information was revealed at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) meeting called Covid-19 and Fragile States: Promoting Resilient Recovery for the Most Vulnerable Communities.

In a session, held on Monday, the Secretary-General highlighted three areas for immediate action so that the resumption of the pandemic benefits everyone, including the group of nations.

First, António Guterres suggested that investments should be increased and targeted at both short-term crisis relief and long-term recovery.

To illustrate the level of debt service costs, he pointed out that global public debt has skyrocketed to 100% of GDP. The UN chief called for priority for the neediest in increasing liquidity for countries.

Second, the Secretary-General said that there must be support for governments, especially in countries affected by crisis and fragility.

The push would focus on social and economic policies that consolidate citizen confidence and increase resilience against future shocks, including the climate crisis.

Guterres recommends that significant funds be applied to achieve universal social protection by 2030, and for people to be prepared for the world of work with new skills and new qualifications.

Finally, he said that to achieve the necessary breakthroughs, the international community must lead the process by showing solidarity and mutual trust.

For the UN chief, cooperation must be coherent in the fields of humanitarian, development and peace in order to achieve common goals.
