The country's year-on-year inflation rose from 5.61% in August to 6.04% in September, the National Statistics Institute (INE) announced on Friday..

This is the first time since November 2017 that prices have risen more than 6% when compared to the same month a year earlier.

Monthly inflation in September was 0.74%, and cumulative inflation this year stands at 3.22% - the year 2020 ended with a value of 3.52%.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as services in restaurants, hotels, cafes, and the like were the items that most pushed up the consumer price index (CPI) in September, the INE explained.

The CPI figures are calculated from the price variations of a basket of goods and services, with data collected in the cities of Maputo, Beira, and Nampula.
