Mozambique may seek Chinese funding to rehabilitate EN1

Moçambique pode recorrer a financiamento chinês para reabilitar EN1

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, expressed, this Monday, the interest of Mozambique in having the financing from China, of about 750 million dollars for the rehabilitation of the National Road Number 1 (EN1).

The will was expressed to the member of the political 'bureau' and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Yang Jiechi.

In the courtesy meeting, Nyusi "spoke of the need to support the rehabilitation of National Road No. 1, which we all know connects our country from one end to the other," according to Foreign Minister Verónica Macamo.

The EN1, which is currently not passable, both because of its width and because there are more potholes than asphalt, is more than 2,400 kilometers long and connects the three regions of the country, namely the south, center, and north.

In addition, the Minister said that Nyusi expects China to finance the construction of the new Assembly of the Republic (AR) headquarters with a new hemicycle, the amount of which was not specified.

The RA plans to build a parliamentary town on the northern shore of Maputo bay (Katembe), and apartments for the deputies, most of whom live in rented residences.

In recent years China has financed major public infrastructures in Mozambique, such as the Maputo ring road - including the Maputo-Katembe Bridge - the Zimpeto National Stadium, and a new Maputo International Airport.
