Rains: Mozambican entrepreneurs warn of food shortages in the south of the country

Chuvas: Empresários moçambicanos alertam para escassez de produtos alimentares no sul do País

The Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA), the largest employers' organization in the country, warned today, Wednesday (10), of a possible shortage of agricultural products and a consequent rise in prices in the coming days, due to the rains that have affected the southern region of the country, flooding several agricultural fields.

According to the Vice-President of the CTA, Maria Abdula, the private sector is surveying the damage and losses in order to assess the damage caused by the floods. However, "preliminary indications are that there has been enormous damage in the form of the destruction of agricultural crops, commercial establishments, machinery and transport routes".

"We anticipate that the normal supply of foodstuffs, such as vegetables, in the coming weeks will be restricted in the south of the country," said the source, stressing that "we will try to manage this as best we can with the ministry and also with the institutions that monitor it so that this doesn't happen."

Meanwhile, Maria Abdula stressed, for example, that the 2024 revenues for the banana sector are already highly compromised due to excessive rain and wind.
