Germany provides another 1 M€ to fight the pandemic in Mozambique

The German government on Tuesday provided another million euros to support the fight against the new coronavirus in Mozambique, at a time when the country is experiencing a worsening of cases, deaths and hospitalizations compared to the third wave.

With the additional amount made available, it amounts to 19.5 million euros Germany's contribution to Mozambique to fight the pandemic, says the German embassy in a note sent to the media.

The amount will serve to "support measures to prevent and manage the adverse effects of covid-19," the embassy adds in the document.

According to Germany, among other things, the funds should also be used for awareness campaigns about covid-19, equipping municipalities with hygiene and protection items to prevent the risk of infection in public places, and supporting campaigns against domestic violence in municipalities in the provinces of Sofala in the center of the country and Inhambane in the south.

The third wave of covid-19, declared in July in Mozambique, is the deadliest, with the number of cases and hospitalizations worsening every day, putting pressure on the country's health system.

Mozambique records a cumulative total of 1,613 covid-19 deaths and 132,452 cases, of which 77% recovered from the disease.
