Political activist Joel Amaral, also known as "Mc Trufafá", believes that democracy in Mozambique is still a far cry from today's reality, as people risk their lives regardless of their financial condition.
"Democracy is still a long way off for Mozambique. Because if you have a different opinion, you are persecuted, whether you have wealth or not, you risk your life. There is still no democracy in Mozambique. We don't have democracy," he said.
Amaral survived an assassination attempt on Sunday (13), in the Benedito Mussa area, on the outskirts of the municipality of Quelimane.
Asked about the possibility of another attempt on his life, Joel Amaral confessed that he didn't feel safe.
"I'm not safe at the moment, because I'm living in a place where only my family knows, precisely because it's not safe," he confessed, not least because while he was in hospital, strangers impersonated his family to try to gain access to his room. "It means that I'm not free to move around the city of Quelimane, because there are still serious risks."
He was speaking to journalists today in the city of Quelimane, a few days after being discharged from hospital. At the time, he refused to recount the episode, due to the discomfort he feels when he remembers what happened. However, he said that the house where he lived had been under surveillance for some time, when asked about his lack of cooperation with the justice system to clarify the case.
"As you can see, I can walk. I'm getting better and the progress is positive. I don't want to give details of what happened because it makes me feel scared and I don't feel comfortable talking about what happened," he explained.
As he said, he will still have to undergo some monitoring sessions to assess the progress of his condition, especially his head, where he was hit by a bullet.
