Early on Thursday morning, Gianni Infantino was re-elected FIFA president at a congress held in the city of Kigali, Rwanda, which went unopposed.

He will therefore serve another term, from 2023 to 2027. This will only be his second, since he himself argues that the first, which ran from 2016 to 2019, should not count towards the limit laid down in the regulations, since it came about in an extraordinary way, as a result of Joseph Blatter's resignation.

"There's a lot to do, and we're here to organize competitions and develop soccer. In terms of competitions, we're going to organize the biggest women's World Cup in 2023," he said, in statements reproduced by the French television station RMC Sport and quoted by Notícias ao Minuto.

"We're going to go from 24 to 32 teams. We're also going to organize the biggest men's World Cup in 2026, increasing it to 48 teams. For many countries it will be their first World Cup, and we have to be inclusive," he continued.

"We've also decided to create a new World Club Championship, which will be held every four years, with the 32 best teams in the world playing in one place to decide which is the best club in the world. We'll do something similar at women's level," he added.
