SERNIC incinerates more than 160 kilograms of drugs seized in Nampula

SERNIC incinera mais de 160 quilogramas de droga apreendida em Nampula

Last Friday (11), the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) in Nampula incinerated around 161.84 kilograms of various drugs seized during the first quarter of 2025 in the districts of Nampula, Mossuril, Nacala-Porto and Angoche.

Among the drugs destroyed were 124.7 kilograms of methamphetamine, 33.84 of heroin, 2.3 of hashish and 1 kilogram of Suazgold, a substance that has worried the authorities.

According to SERNIC's spokesperson in Nampula, Enina Tsinine, the seizures were the result of coordinated work between SERNIC, the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) and the Public Prosecutor's Office. "We have four people in custody. In the process of seizing the drugs, we have presented three defendants, and in relation to the drug found in Nacala-Porto, steps are still underway to identify and present the owner," explained Enina Tsinine, quoted by the Rigor newspaper.

One of the biggest concerns raised by SERNIC concerns the entry of the drug Suazgold into a prison, namely the Northern Regional Prison. "SERNIC alone cannot complete this work. That's why it will be necessary to work together with the prison system," said Tsinine.

Although she did not confirm the direct involvement of agents from the National Prison Service (SERNAP), the spokeswoman acknowledged that there are weaknesses in the internal control of prisons. "The drugs were seized thanks to internal work in the penitentiary, based on information we received. It was possible to identify some inmates in possession of the substance. Even so, the investigations are continuing to find out who is facilitating the entry of the drug into the prison," he concluded.
