Renamo accused of mismanaging 18 million dollars of public money

Renamo acusada de má gestão de 18 milhões de dólares do dinheiro público

Renamo MP Venâncio Mondlane describes the Renamo National Council, held on Sunday, as autocratic, dictatorial, funereal and frightening, because it did not address irrevocable aspects in accordance with the party's statutes.

The former advisor to Ossufo Momade says that the meeting violated the party's statutes by not discussing the financial year of the last five years (accounts report), the budget proposal for 2025.

"Nothing has been presented on the financial report. And this is serious because one of the workhorses is financial management. It's at the heart of everything," he said, stressing that by evading the party's economic issues during the meeting, Renamo had "shot itself in the foot".

Having done the math, according to the MP, Renamo's 60 seats in the Assembly of the Republic, including some donations, earn the party an average of 10 million meticais a month, or 120 million a year. On top of this, around 90 million meticais a year is channeled to the office of the leader of the second most voted party with a parliamentary seat. Over five years, the combined value is around 15 million dollars a year.

Quoting the party's statutes, I said that the Secretary General is responsible for drawing up the accounts of the party's activities, which he then submits to the Political Commission for evaluation and then to the National Council for approval.

"The problem is in this whole chain," he said, noting that the issue has not been addressed because there has been mismanagement of the funds, which come from the public purse.
