SOUTH32, Mozal's majority shareholder, has donated more than 44 million meticais to support the flood response and recovery efforts in the southern region of the country.
The donation was given to Caritas, an international humanitarian organization that is working to provide aid in Mozambique after the floods caused by heavy rains in recent months.
According to Noel Pillay, South32's operations director, the impact on people living in communities close to Mozal has been severe, affecting approximately 6,000 hectares of farmland and flooding more than 7,000 homes, where many live off agriculture.
South32's contribution will support around 3,900 agricultural kits, including tools and agricultural inputs, and 12,600 seeds to help restore livelihoods to communities in the districts of Boane, Namaacha and Moamba, in Maputo province. It will also provide food for 1,000 vulnerable local families.
South32's director of operations said that "we continually sympathize with all the victims of these storms, including those in Mozambique and Madagascar who have been affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy".
The source congratulated the agencies and non-governmental organizations that provide humanitarian aid and support in disaster recovery, explaining that this donation, in addition to supporting long-term recovery by helping to restore agricultural activity and acquire livelihoods, will provide food for 1,000 vulnerable families.
