The properties of Mozambicans in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are equivalent to a little more than half of one percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), or 0.53%. According to one publication, the fortune of Mozambicans in Dubai reaches 78 million dollars, in a total of 359 properties.
The document published this Monday (16), and to which MZNews had access today, advances that this fortune belongs to 67 Mozambicans, where men represent 72% and the remaining 28% women. The wealth originates from dubious businesses such as drug trafficking, corruption, and the escape from the kidnapping industry.
Comparing Zimbabwe's figures in Dubai, the paper says that that neighboring country's properties equate to only 0.24% of GDP and both Malawi and South Africa account for 0.18% of their GDP.
"This means that rich Mozambicans are diverting three times more money to Dubai than the rich in South Africa or Malawi," it reads.
An investigation of the Pandora Papers by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists reported the United Arab Emirates as an offshore haven for Africa's political and business elite, the paper said.
"Dubai is the largest city in the United Arab Emirates. Former Mozambican Finance Minister Manuel Chang was arrested in December 2018 in South Africa on his way to Dubai," the source recalled.
