MPDC announces EPC tender for DP World Maputo expansion project

MPDC anuncia concurso EPC para o projecto de expansão da DP World Maputo

Sociedade de Desenvolvimento do Porto de Maputo (MPDC) announces the publication of the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) tender for phase 1 of the expansion of the Maputo port container terminal (operated by a consortium led by DP World, a global leader in the supply chain and logistics).

According to the press release we received, this tender marks the start of the expansion works, which were announced in February this year, following the extension of the Port of Maputo's concession contract from the current 255,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to 530,000 TEUs.

The tender, which has been extended to pre-selected contractors, the statement said, kicks off Phase 1 of the expansion project, which is a "design and build" contract. The project plan involves comprehensive development in several key areas:

Civil, mechanical, electrical and plumbing infrastructures: comprehensive rehabilitations to modernize and improve the efficiency of existing facilities.

Quay and container yard equipment: supply and installation of state-of-the-art quay and container yard equipment to increase operational capacity.

Auxiliary works: development of access roads, gate complexes and other essential support structures to facilitate operations.

The new quay will undergo significant widening and an expansion to the west of the existing coal quay, resulting in a total quay length of 650 meters for Phase 1.

This extension will allow the installation of three cranes Ship-to-Shore (STS) Super Post Panamax, significantly increasing the terminal's handling capacity.

An integral part of the project is the deepening of the quay to -16m (quays 11 and 12).

Pier 10 remains at -12m. This improvement is crucial to accommodate larger ships, thus increasing the terminal's handling capacity.

When it is completed, before the end of 2026, the expanded terminal will have a capacity of 530,000 TEUs, positioning Maputo as a hub in the regional maritime network.

This expansion is expected to boost economic growth, improve commercial capacities and create numerous job opportunities.
