Government bans shrimp and mangrove crab fishing

Governo veda pesca do camarão e caranguejo de mangal

The Ministry of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries (MIMAIP) announced, this Thursday, the beginning of the ban of fishing for surface shrimp and mangrove crab, from next November 1st to March 31st 2022.

The ban on shrimp fishing, through Law No. 22/2013 of November 1 (Fisheries Law), which was enacted by the Government of Mozambique, covers the Sofala bank for industrial, semi-industrial and artisanal fishing, as well as in the Maputo Bay and Limpopo River mouth for semi-industrial and artisanal fishing.

For mangrove crab fishing, in turn, the ban will be in effect along the entire Mozambican coast from November 1 to December 31, 2021.

The duration of this ban has been characterized by a close inspection against transgressors, seizure of illegally caught products, harmful fishing gear, as well as actions to raise awareness among fishermen, in particular, and society in general, for its strict observance, taking into account the benefits of fisheries management for the subsequent fishing season.
