Government plans to invest in electric rail transport linking the whole country

Governo pretende investir no transporte eléctrico ferroviário que une todo o país

The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, said on Thursday (29) in Maputo that the government has a "green" plan to invest in the construction of a railroad, for the circulation of electric meters, which connects Mozambique.

"Our genuine ambition is that in the next five years, if we have the necessary resources and focus, we can connect Mozambique, from Rovuma to Maputo, via rail. In doing so, there's no better way than using electricity because it's energy that we have here, that we already produce and even export," he said.

According to Magala, the pilot project is valued at 100 million dollars and will be on the 88 km Maputo-Ressano Garcia line in Maputo province.

This "green mobility" project, as Magala pointed out, includes the hundreds of electric transports planned for the implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.

"The big challenge is the limited resources we always have in terms of funding, but that doesn't stop us from dreaming, undertaking and accomplishing, and that's what's going to happen," assured the Minister.
