Civil servants and state agents will not receive their 13th salaries this year, the President of the Republic revealed today at the Assembly of the Republic in Maputo City.
Filipe Nyusi said that the government had decided to do this because of the impact of the implementation of the Single Salary Table (TSU) on the state's accounts and because there were other priorities, such as restoring security in the north of the country.
Presenting the report on the general state of the nation for the year 2022, the PR revealed that, with the implementation of the TSU, the salaries of state agents now exceed twice the weight of the old salary pyramid on the state budget.
The payment of arrears for three months, namely July, August and September, also influenced the application of this "containment measure", said Nyusi, noting that the government's desire was to "provide better social conditions for all state employees and agents".
"In view of this overload and the need to respond to national imperatives that include the stabilization efforts in northern Mozambique, we regret to announce that this year we are unable to bonus civil servants with the 13th salary," announced Filipe Nyusi.
He recalled that this was not a new measure, as it had been applied "at other times when financial conditions didn't allow it".
On the other hand, the PR revealed that the government is evaluating the possibility of giving pensioners a 13th salary, due to the pay cut they suffer when they retire.
"With the same straightforwardness that we announced this measure of restraint, we also want to announce that we are making every effort to make it possible to pay the 13th salary to pensioners, given the vulnerability of this social group," he said.
