Constitutional Council delivers final verdict on country's future today

Conselho Constitucional dita hoje a sentença final sobre futuro do país

The future of the country will be decided today (23.12) by the Constitutional Council after the final reading of the ruling by the president of this body, Lúcia Ribeiro, on the results of the seventh general elections.

After a period of two months characterized by intense nationwide demonstrations called by the presidential candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, in protest at the results released by the National Electoral Commission, the Constitutional Council (CC) will today have the tough task of deciding the future of the country.

In the words of Venâncio Mondlane himself, the Constitutional Council's decision on the general elections will determine peace or chaos in the country.

Today, at the Joaquim Chissano Conference Center in Maputo, Lúcia Ribeiro will decide who will govern the country for the next five years.

Never before in the country's history have Mozambicans been so expectant and at the same time apprehensive about the release of the election results as we are currently seeing.

Depending on what will be announced, uncertainty and fear have been gripping Mozambican citizens and foreigners alike.

There are reports that several citizens have already left the country, fearing a possible wave of protests and violence after the final results are announced.

Venâncio Mondlane, the leader of the demonstrations, has already asked the people to stay at home and watch the reading of the judgment that will dictate the direction the country can take in the coming days.
