The group is led by Todd Boehly, co-owner of the Los Angeles Doeres baseball team, and will acquire Chelsea for 4.25 billion pounds (4.9 billion euros), the London soccer club announced.

"The sale is expected to be completed by the end of May, subject to obtaining all necessary regulatory approvals.", Chelsea FC added in a statement released on Friday evening.

It is known that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich put the club up for sale in March, days before it was targeted by British sanctions following Russia's February 24 invasion of Ukraine.

After a lengthy bidding process involving several groups, Boehly and partner investors were chosen by the New York-based Raine Group, which is overseeing the sale.

The group of buyers includes Mark Walter, also co-owner of the Dodgers, Swiss billionaire Hansjoerg Wyss and US investment firm Clearlake Capital.

"Chelsea can confirm that terms have been agreed for a new ownership group, led by Todd Boehly, Clearlake Capital, Mark Walter and Hansjoerg Wyss, to acquire the club," added the same note which is quoted by Lusa.

"Of the total investment to be made, 2.5 billion pounds (€2.9 billion) will be used to buy back the club's shares and this sum will be deposited in a frozen bank account in the UK with the intention of donating 100% to charity as agreed by Roman Abramovich," he indicated.

In addition, the new owners have committed to invest a further £1.75 billion (two billion euros) on behalf of the club, according to the statement.
