15-seat "Chapas" should circulate up to 10 km in Maputo city

Semi-collective 15-seat passenger transports will circulate up to a distance of 10 kilometers in Maputo city center. The measure aims to avoid shortening routes, according to the Municipal Council.

The deputy director of Mobility, Transport and Traffic, in the Municipality of Maputo, Loide Massangaie, explained that the licensing of semi-collective passenger transport aims to reduce route shortening and unfair competition.

"This is a work that stems from a study conducted in the context of indiscipline that often happened on public roads, by operators with vehicles of lower capacity, which traveled long distances, which did not have the desired effect, in the perspective that the operating costs were not covered by the fare charged," said Loide Massangaie, deputy director of Mobility, Transport and Traffic, in the Municipality of Maputo, cited by the newspaper País.

The measure does not cover already licensed transporters, with documents still within the deadline and operating over a distance of more than 10 kilometers: "This is an exchange for the benefit of the worker himself. The vehicles already licensed will be able to finish their license time, or, during the year, they can request the exchange for shorter routes", explained Massangaie.

The measure contemplates the "chapeiros" of the following routes: Praça dos Combatentes-Baixa; Praça dos Combatentes-Museu; Praça dos Combatentes-Xipamanine; Xipamanine-Baixa; Xipamanine-Laulane; Xipamanine-Museu; Costa do Sol-Magoanine and CMC-Magoanine.

The new measure comes as part of the reorganization of the transport sector in the country's capital.
