Tax burden reduced net salary for public employees - MEF

Carga fiscal reduziu salário líquido de funcionários públicos – MEF

The cases of net salary reductions in the civil service are due to the tax burden applied to salaries paid under the new Single Salary Table (TSU), according to the Minister of Economy and Finance (MEF), Max Tonela.

"In view of the increase in the amount of the basic salary resulting from the implementation of the reform, taking into account the combined effect of the existence of the progressive tax regime and the deductions for retirement, we have registered some situations of reduction in the net salary," he said.

These cases, he continued, particularly affected professionals in special careers, such as doctors, magistrates and teachers linked to research.

Max Tonela explained that, in the context of the TSU, the government has tried to incorporate allowances into the basic salary, in order to ensure that workers enjoy comfortable pensions, but this increase in salary has led to an increase in the tax burden.

"The remuneration of a considerable group of civil servants was mostly made up of non-pension allowances, which left them exposed to drastic reductions in their quality of life when they entered retirement," he emphasized.

The implementation of the TSU sought to remedy this situation and enhance the value of professions, which resulted in an increase in the basic salaries of all professional groups.

"There is, in this context, a salary increase for all civil servants who, due to their position, had salaries below those provided for in the single salary scale, and the irreducibility of salaries has been ensured for the others, meaning that no civil servant has had or will have their salary reduced," he said.
