"We are right": Minister Magala responds to criticism of the extension of the Port of Maputo concession contract

“Estamos certos”: Ministro Magala responde às críticas sobre a extensão do contrato de concessão do Porto de Maputo

The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, believes that civil society's interpretation of the extension of the Port of Maputo concession contract is incorrect because the government is still in office.

Civil society is questioning the rationale behind the government's decision, at the end of its mandate, to extend the Port of Maputo's concession contract for another 25 years from 2033.. What's more, calls for an investigation into the trips of the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, to the United Arab Emirates, since the Arab country is supposedly the biggest beneficiary of this business through DP World.

The one quoted by NewsMateus Magala explained that the Nyusi government took this decision precisely because it was still in office, and that negotiations to extend the concession began in 2022.

"The interpretation [of civil society] is incorrect. We're still in government, and this executive ends on December 31st of this year, unless they wanted us to think that, since January 1st of this year, we should have stayed at home," he said.

The Minister stressed that the government will continue to take decisions in the present and future interests of the country until the last moment.

"It's an obligation to make prudent decisions that lay the foundations for those who will govern later. The most important thing is that decisions are made transparently," he said.

The Center for Public Integrity predicts that this concession will limit the decision-making power of the next governments, even if the situation requires revisions and changes to the contract.

But Magala assures us: "We decided to extend the concession because we're sure we're right. DP World is a giant in the port business. It's in the US, the UK, Australia and other countries with the biggest and best ports."
