Elon Musk plans to build his own city on about a thousand acres of recently acquired pasture and farmland outside the Texas capital, according to deeds and other land records and people familiar with the project.
According to the Wall Street JournalMusk intends to build his city in Texas, but far from the capital Austin, where employees of his companies could live and work. "[This] would allow Mr. Musk to establish some regulations in his own municipality and accelerate his plans," writes the newspaper quoting sources familiar with Musk's projects. Last year, a meeting was held to discuss the need to elect a mayor.
The principle of Musk and other executives associated with the project is that workers from Boring, electric car manufacturer Tesla, and Space X will live in new homes with below-market rents.
The planned city is adjacent to the Boring and SpaceX facilities now under construction. The site already includes a group of modular homes, a swimming pool, an outdoor sports area and a gym. Signs hanging from poles read "welcome, snailbrook, tx, est. 2021."
Mr. Musk, his former girlfriend, who is the singer Grimes, Kanye West and Mr. West's architectural designer, discussed several times last year what a Musk city could look like. The meetings had no concrete effects.
Under Texas law, a city needs at least 201 residents before it can apply for incorporation, then the approval of a county judge. Bastrop County has not received a request from Musk or any of his entities.
