Between 350 and 400 million dollars is the amount to be invested in agriculture and rural development areas starting in 2023, in Zambezia province. The initiative is from the Millennium Challenge Corporation, a development program of the U.S. and Mozambican governments.
It was confirmed on Friday, the compact two, between Mozambique and the Millennium Challenge Corporation, a U.S. agency supporting socio-economic development projects. It means that after the 500 million dollars funded in Mozambique in 2019, in compact one, which involved water and sanitation projects, a new horizon of development initiatives opens, and this time with Zambézia province as the focus.
"Because of the way we have executed this compact, the American government has decided to approve it in Mozambique so that we can work towards achieving compact two," said the Minister of Economy and Finance, Adriano Maleiane.
According to MCC's executive director for Mozambique, Kannet Miller, "initially there will be a focus on Zambezia province, but that doesn't mean that over time you can't have other projects evolving in the compact that are not specifically for that province.
Not yet stipulated is the specific amount that will be allocated for the project that is scheduled to start in 2023. "At 350 to 400 million, but it could be more or also less, it all depends on the justification. We know the conditions that Mozambique for a good investment, but this is a process that takes time to ensure that the investment we are making," said Kannet Miller.
Besides the agricultural and rural development component, the initiative will also focus on the mitigation of adverse natural phenomena.
