EU denies Mozambique a new 20 million euro loan for Rwandan troops

UE dá um nega a Moçambique a um novo empréstimo de 20 milhoes de euros para tropas ruandesas

Mozambique saw its request for a loan of 20 million euros denied by some members of the European Union because they considered the request to be inappropriate. The request was made without the knowledge of the Assembly of the Republic.

The money, according to reports in the national press, would be used to support the Rwandan army, which is operating alongside national troops in the fight against terrorism in the north of the country.
Visão newspaper quotes Africa Intelligence as saying that a few weeks ago, Mozambique had already submitted a new request for support under the European Peace Facility (EFF) for Rwandan troops in Cabo Delgado province.

EU member states also consider that the timing of this request is not the most appropriate.

"It happens just a few weeks before the presidential elections in Rwanda (July 15), in which Paul Kagame should be easily re-elected, the European elections (June 6-9) and, above all, in the middle of the war in the east of the DRC, where Rwanda is accused in UN reports of supporting M23

According to the newspaper, Belgium seems to be the member state most opposed to helping the Rwandan army in Mozambique.

Political and military instability in Cabo Delgado casts doubt on the approval of the request The stability of the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado is crucial if oil companies Total Energies and their partners - including several Indian groups - are to revive LNG.

It should be noted that in 2023, the EU had already disbursed the first check for 20 million euros through the EFF, a victory for Kigali achieved after heated debates. A disbursement that was not at all consensual for EU members.
