Public transportation becomes free of charge for young and old in Lisbon

The mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, announced this Thursday that the City Council unanimously approved free public transportation in the city for young and elderly people.

The official said that the measure, for which some technological processes are underway, may come into effect in June or July for seniors over 65, and in September, when the next school year begins, for young students up to 23 years of age.

Carlos Moeda said that this initiative, as part of the fight against climate change, is already being implemented in three European cities.

"It is also an historic day in what I wanted to bring to politics, which is the ability to do politics with everyone," added Carlos Moedas, who has governed the Lisbon City Council (CML) since October without a majority.

The mayor of Lisbon guaranteed that the measure now approved resulted from months of work with all councilmen, who helped to build and improve the proposal.
