TikTok risks being banned from the European Union

TikTok corre o risco de ser banido da União Europeia

TikTok has come under fire recently and is now facing an ultimatum: if it doesn't comply with European legislation, the social network could be banned from the European Union (EU).

Thierry Breton, the organization's Commissioner for Internal Markets, is the one to sound the alarm, stressing that it is "unacceptable for users to be able to access harmful content that could put their lives in danger in a matter of seconds".

According to Notícias ao Minuto, this news comes after the professional in question met remotely with the CEO of TikTok, Shou Zi Chew, stressing that the European Union will not hesitate to apply all sanctions to protect citizens if the rules laid down in the Digital Services Act (DSA) are not reviewed and readjusted by September 1st of this year.

In response, TikTok guarantees that it is committed to the DSA and that it has already defined the changes to be made in order to comply with European rules, which also include the GDPR - General Data Protection Regulation, which provides for the protection of user data.

The threat hanging over TikTok is nothing new for the Chinese platform, as the United States has issued similar warnings in recent years. In the case of the US, the concerns also include access to user data by the app's Chinese collaborators: at the end of 2022, TikTok admitted to having accessed the data of two journalists in an attempt to obtain information.
