Silence of the Administrative Court dictates postponement of the beer sealing case

Silêncio do Tribunal Administrativo dita adiamento do processo da selagem de cervejas

The Mozambique Tax Authority (AT) announced on Tuesday, the postponement of the beginning of the ban on unsealed beers and ready-to-consume beverages in the Mozambican market to November 1st.

According to the newspaper Notícias, the measure is due to the Administrative Court's failure to rule on an appeal filed by beer producing and importing companies in Mozambique, contesting the sealing.

The use of the digital seal on beers marks the third phase of the sealing process for manufactured tobacco and alcoholic beverages that the country's tax authority is introducing to reduce cases of tax evasion and smuggling of these products.

However, the implementation of the measure has not met with consensus, especially on the part of the business sector. For example, the Confederation of Business Associations of Mozambique (CTA) reaffirmed its intention to continue to dialogue with the government on the sealing of beer and ready-to-consume beverages, allegedly because it is a process out of line with the reality of the market.
