WTO report reveals destinations with fully closed borders

Relatório da OMT revela destinos com fronteiras totalmente encerradas

The World Tourism Organization (WTO) reports that a total of 46 (21%) tourist destinations in the world have their borders closed to international tourism, 26 of them as of the end of April 2020.

The information is contained in the report on travel restrictions, released Friday, which finds that another 55 (25% of all destinations worldwide) operate at half-gas once their borders are partially closed to international tourism, and 112 (52%) require PCR testing of new tourists.

The document reveals that 85 destinations (39% of all destinations worldwide) have revised their restrictions to allow fully vaccinated international tourists to arrive, but only four destinations have so far lifted all covid-19 related restrictions, namely: Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Mexico.

"The continuing challenges posed by the pandemic indicate the importance of national authorities ensuring that procedures and requirements can be managed in a timely, reliable and consistent manner across all information systems and platforms," said WTO Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili.

The survey shows that regional differences in travel restrictions remain. Asia/Pacific remains the region with the most restrictions in place, with 65% of all destinations fully closed, while Europe is the region of the world most open to international tourists (7% of borders fully closed), followed by Africa (9%), the Americas (10%) and the Middle East (15%).
