Rehabilitation of the Port of Nacala ends in March 2023

Reabilitação do Porto de Nacala termina em Março de 2023

The rehabilitation work at the Port of Nacala, in the province of Nampula, in northern Mozambique, should be finished by March next year, reports "Notícias", noting that more than 90% have already been completed.

The work was scheduled to finish this year, but due, to a greater extent, to the covid-19 pandemic, the timing had to be revised, said the Director of the Nacala Port Rehabilitation Project Implementation Unit.

"We still have some work to complete, so we think we need another three months to finish [the work]. There are things that are beyond our control, beyond our will," said Edgar Jorge.

The Japanese Agency for Cooperation and Development (JICA) has financed 277.5 million dollars for the rehabilitation of the Port of Nacala. The work includes, among other things, dredging, building access roads, paving the yards, acquiring modern equipment, building three parks and improving the conditions for berthing ships.

Cargo handled at the Port of Nacala is expected to increase by 152%, from the current 100,000 to 252,000 20-foot containers per year.

The Port of Nacala should reduce the length of stay and facilitate the transit of goods and become the most important port in the region.
