Zimbabwe's president plans to escalate Mozambique to finalize energy import agreements

Zimbabwean President Emerson Mnangagwa may travel to Mozambique where, alongside the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, he is expected to finalize energy import agreements.

"This week I am making a working visit to the sister republic of Mozambique," Mnangagwa wrote in his weekly letter published in the Sunday Mail Zimbabwe newspaper.

Power supply in the country has deteriorated in recent weeks, aggravated by reduced generation at the Hwange and Harare thermal power plants, including the loss of a generating unit at the Kariba Power Station.

In addition to Mozambique, Emerson Mnangagwa foresees that in the same period he will climb the republic of Zambia with the same objective.

"In the next few weeks I will probably meet with President Hichilema of Zambia in Livingstone.

Zimbabwe sees the conclusion of these agreements with the two nations as an interim measure for the continuity of uninterrupted emergy supply.

"Both sister countries supply us with energy. I will engage my peers to ensure that our energy imports are secure and uninterrupted," he said.

The government, he said, would ensure that the energy needs of the economy are fully met through domestic energy production and energy imports that fill the gaps.
