The Mozambican Order of Doctors will set up a commission of inquiry to find out what caused a cloth to be left inside the patient's abdomen.

The Order of Doctors is the body responsible for licensing the practice of medicine in Mozambique and has reacted to the case of the cloth left in a patient's abdomen in a statement.

In an interview with "O País", the President of the Portuguese Medical Association, Gilberto Manhiça, said that this was an abnormal case that he may have resorted to in an extreme situation.

The association's president does not rule out the possibility that the mechanism was used as the only alternative to stop the bleeding.

Manhiça also said that the normal protocol for all objects entering the operating field is to be checked on entry and exit, which reduces speculation about a possible medical error. (Source: O País)
