Mobile phone operators begin work to reset tariffs

Operadoras de telefonia móvel iniciam trabalhos de reposição das tarifas

On Sunday evening (16), the mobile phone companies began work to restore the tariffs in use before the suspension by the National Communications Institute of Mozambique (INCM), through a resolution of February 19.

On May 28, the government, through the Council of Ministers at its 17th ordinary session, ordered the immediate suspension of the new minimum tariffs practiced by mobile phone companies for voice calls, SMS and data, which had been approved by the regulator.

The measure came after intense social protest over the new mobile phone tariffs approved by the regulator.

According to the Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications, Amilton Alissone, who was speaking at a press conference at the end of a session of the Council of Ministers, the decision to direct the communications regulator to suspend the tariffs in force comes from the evaluation of various elements presented to the Council of Ministers.

"We're going back to the old tariffs while the regulator studies the best ones for the national market," said Amilton Alissone.
