The United Nations (UN) intends to eradicate hunger in Mozambique, and some agencies in the country say they are dealing with factors that contribute to food insecurity.
According to Hernâni Coelho, UN representative in Mozambique, hunger can only be ended through combined actions and the integration of humanitarian policies. And among other aspects to be considered, it is important to intervene along the food supply chains "to reduce the transaction cost".
Coelho was speaking on Friday as part of the celebration of World Food Day. This year celebrated under the slogan "Our actions are our future - Better production, better nutrition, better environment and a better life".
For her part, the World Food Program's representative in Mozambique, Antonella Daprille, said that the natural disasters that have hit the country have contributed greatly to the food shortage.
"Cyclones and storms hit communities already buffeted by drought and plague, destroy crops, infrastructure, goods and livelihoods, and can cause internal displacement and potential conflict," he indicated.
The head of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization praised the government's decision to allocate at least 10% of the State Budget to the agriculture sector.
"The added value that FAO can bring to Mozambique is the technical skills and policy knowledge of the sector, acquired over the years that can contribute to a holistic, realistic and sustainable vision for the development of the sector," he said.
The commemorations of the date in Maputo included agricultural and gastronomic activities with an emphasis on products that promote a nutritious diet.
