This afternoon, the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, expressed his openness to talks with the four candidates for the Presidency of the Republic, Lutero Simango of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique, Venâncio Mondlane, an independent supported by Podemos, Ossufo Momade of Renamo and Daniel Chapo of Frelimo.
According to Nyusi, the possible meeting is to jointly find solutions to the current post-election situation, marked by socio-economic setbacks.
"I want to take this opportunity to invite the four presidential candidates to accept my appeal so that, together, we can assess this situation and find a solution that benefits the Mozambicans we love, the country and the people need us," he said.
Nyusi was speaking in his first communication to the nation on the escalation of protests against alleged electoral fraud in the October 9 general elections.
The preliminary election results released by the National Electoral Commission (CNE) put the Frelimo candidate, Daniel Chapo, in the lead with 70% of the votes. Venâncio Mondlane, who has been the face of the protests, is in second place. Before the results were released by the CNE, citing a parallel tabulation by his team, he was already claiming victory. Since then, through peaceful demonstrations on October 21, he has been seeking to restore electoral truth.
Despite expressing openness to dialogue, Nyusi called on everyone to wait for the Constitutional Council to validate and release the results.
