The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) has decided to suspend the new interprovincial and international road transport tariffs, proposed by the Mozambican Road Transport Federation (FEMATRO), which should have gone into effect this Wednesday.
According to the MTC there needs to be further negotiations with the operators in order to find a compromise on the public transport fare.
"The creation of a multi-sectoral commission for the preparation of studies and analysis of the readjustment of fares, and the granting of transport subsidies on the passenger carried is underway," the MTC said in a statement.
It should be noted that FEMATRO has recently proposed to the government that the price per kilometer/passenger be increased from 1.50 meticais to two meticais.
The suspended fare was 1.75 meticais kilometer/passenger, that is, from Maputo˗Pemba one of the routes that had the most aggravation, the ticket would cost 4,500 against the previous 3,600 meticais. From Maputo to Xai-xai, Zavala, Maxixe, Beira, Nampula tickets would cost 360, 600, 850, 2100 and 3600 meticais respectively.
