The Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) is working with various institutions to ensure the safe circulation of trucks on the N4 National Road, due to the possible ban on the circulation of cargo vehicles at peak times.
"We are working with the transport companies, the EN4 concessionaire (TRAC) and the road safety directorate of the Ministry of Transport and Communications to improve the night-time traffic situation, with emphasis on placing lighting and cat's eyes on the roads, to allow visibility of the edge of the lanes," said Osório Lucas, Executive Director of the MPDC, quoted by the newspaper. Sunday.
The incentive for trucks to circulate at night on the EN4 also has to do with the small number of vehicles that circulate at night, around 200.
The management of Portos de Maputo is also going to build a parking lot for cargo trucks at the Pessene administrative post, Moamba district, Maputo province. The space will serve as a waiting point for trucks that will be banned from traveling towards the Port of Maputo during peak hours.
The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, recently announced a ban on truck traffic during rush hour in order to allow for greater road mobility in the Greater Maputo region.
Magala challenged the MPDC to use the railway line to transport certain materials and Osório Lucas said that this required rolling stock such as locomotives and wagons.
"Just to give you an idea, at the Port of Maputo there are two million tons of unused capacity on the railway line for receiving rail cargo. In Matola there are 2,500,000 tons available to receive goods by train," he said.
