Mozambique experiences price increases after four months of deflation

Mozambique again registered price increases in August, after four consecutive months of deflation, the National Statistics Institute (INE) announced..

August ended with a monthly inflation of 0.19%, reads the Consumer Price Index (CPI) bulletin released on Friday, according to which year-on-year inflation was 5.61% (up from 5.48% in July).

Average 12-month inflation settled at 4.61%, the highest since October 2018.

In the short and medium term, the Bank of Mozambique expects "inflation to remain in single digits, despite the prospects of rising food and oil prices on the international market," it announced in a statement.

Mozambique ended 2020 with a cumulative inflation of 3.52%.

The CPI figures are calculated from the price variations of a basket of goods and services, with data collected in the cities of Maputo, Beira, and Nampula.
