Mozambique may ban raw ore exports

Moçambique pode banir exportação de minério bruto

The Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME) is working with the main players in the sector to ensure that mineral resources exploited in the country are exported after being processed.

The aim is to maximize the gains from the exploitation of mineral resources and promote the country's industrial development by processing the products locally.

The amount of minerals processed in the country is less than the volume exported, and this leads to the need to create a regulatory framework, according to the MIREME Minister.

"The indicators we have are below what is desirable. We want the situation to be reversed in the future. We're working with all the players so that some of this processing happens here in the country," said Carlos Zacarias.

The Minister was speaking recently at the opening of the IX MIREME Coordinating Council, in the administrative post of Matibane, Mossuril district, in Nampula province.

In his view, the goal may be achievable in the medium and long term, due to the legal mechanisms that still need to be put in place.
