Mozambique loses $60 million a year to illegal fishing

Moçambique perde 60 milhões de dólares por ano por pesca ilegal

The country loses about 60 million dollars annually due to illegal fishing, says the Minister of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries.

Augusta Maíta said this Wednesday in Maputo, at the opening of the Inter-institutional Forum on Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing, that some artisanal fishing operators, besides using mosquito nets for their activities, do not respect the recommendations of the sector's authorities.

According to the governor, other transgressions are practiced at a supranational level, by vessels that invade national waters and illegally capture several fishing species, especially tuna.

For Augusta Maíta, the fact requires, from the government, greater inspection up to the limit of the Exclusive Economic Zone, to help combat maritime and transnational crimes.

The Minister of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries says the country is working to swiftly implement the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission agreement, which mandates the landing of species caught illegally in Indian Ocean waters.

At a national level, the agreement on Port State Measures of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission will be implemented in the Ports of Maputo, Beira and Nacala.
