Mozambique makes major breakthrough in diamond industry

A major breakthrough could be made by Mozambique in investments in the diamond sector. The steps towards Mozambique joining the Kimberley Process, which is expected to be formalized later this year, will open the door to the diamond market.

For the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Max Tonela, the intervention of the Kimberley Process Management Unit has been contributing to the increase in the value of production and exports of gold and precious stones and the registration of minerals whose production and exports were not captured in the national accounts.

It should be noted that in order to improve the mining sector's contribution to the country's development, MIREME has taken the decision to extend the screening to all strategic minerals, initially covering coal, heavy sands and graphite.

New resource control mechanism

The Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME) will introduce, starting next year, a certification mechanism to control the quantities and quality of the resources, as well as the market prices for each export

MIREME's expectation is that the taxes paid will correspond to what is actually produced.

According to Max Tonela, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, from the debates around the challenges in the mining sector, the need to restructure the National Mining Institute (INAMI) and to improve the mining legislation was noted, in order to simplify the procedures in the processing of processes, so as to strengthen the regulator's capacity to intervene in case of non-compliance.
