Mozambique still hasn't chosen land to invest 30 million dollars and build a sports complex

Moçambique ainda não escolheu terreno para aplicar 30 milhões de dólares e erguer complexo desportivo

Mozambique has yet to decide how and where to implement the 30 million dollars made available by the Algerian government for the construction of a multi-purpose sports complex. Initial projections point to the capital Maputo, the citadel of Maputo province (Matola).

According to Carlos Gilberto Mendes, Secretary of State for Sport, work on defining the site where the multi-use complex will be built will begin next week.

"We're now going to start looking at the best place to build it. There are several possibilities, many spaces. The important thing is that we combine all of our strengths in favor of the arena's location. It could be in the area adjacent to the National State of Zimpeto... It could also be in the citadel of Matola, for example, which is a very privileged area, or in the Ferroviário area, adjacent to the Machava Stadium, or even on the KaTembe side," he said, as quoted by Radio Mozambique.

The government of Algeria will donate the money, according to the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, who said that the work of structuring the project would fall to Mozambique, for later evaluation by the donor.

"When we raised our concerns about building a multi-purpose arena, the government immediately agreed and said it would donate 30 million US dollars to build a sports arena, which all of us who live in sports feel the country doesn't have. That's going to be a big gain. The ball is in our court, because we have to complete what exactly we want, how we want it, and then we move on to evaluating them so that they can support us," said Filipe Nyusi on Saturday, at the end of his visit to Algeria.

That country has committed itself to hosting internships for Mozambican athletes, as part of strengthening cooperation ties.

Gilberto Mendes told the broadcaster that another next step is to reach an agreement with the contractor on the prospect of a multi-purpose sports facility.

"...if you build an arena for five or seven thousand spectators... what features will the infrastructure have attached to it? We want an arena that doesn't become a management nightmare afterwards," he said.
